Peter May inaugurated into Cricket Hall of Fame

Peter May in Hall of Fame

Peter May, the great England cricketer, was inaugurated into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on Thursday 9th July. Past legends of the game are being honoured by the establishment of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame to celebrate the ICC’s centenary year.

On the second day of the first Ashes Test against Australia in Cardiff, Peter May’s widow, Virginia, was presented with a commemorative cap to honour his contribution to English Cricket. Peter captained England 41 times, winning 20 games, more victories than any other England captain until Michael Vaughan.

In 1995 an appeal was launched by the Foundation, in memory of Peter May, to fund the building of a new pavilion at Wadham Lodge. As a result of the appeal and funding from the Sports Lottery a brand new pavilion, called The Peter May Sports Centre, was opened in 2000.

The Peter May Sports Centre is the Foundation’s flagship ground. As well as housing a health and fitness suite, changing rooms and studios it has a large indoor sports hall with six cricket nets. It is used by Essex Count Cricket Board as their Metropolitan development centre – a legacy Peter May would have been proud of.
